  • Wear sandals in public showers.

Scouters’ tip: Remember, sick days can and should also be used for your mental health.

  • Find out about your local addiction centre. Share its information with your Crew. Let members know that there are places to turn to for discrete, expert help. For example, visit the Nova Scotia Addiction Services

Day 2: Home and Family Safety

Tips to share:
 
  • Keep your camping gear in an accessible place for emergencies.
  • Keep your entranceway clear and tidy. In an emergency, you may have to leave your house or apartment in a hurry.
  • Don’t keep clutter on stairways.

Scouters’ tip: Secure your garbage at night to deter attracting dangerous wildlife.

Day 3: Street and Community Safety

Tips to share:
 
  • If possible, share the driving on long trips.
  • Use cruise control to avoid speeding.
  • Wear sunglasses on bright days while driving.

Scouters’ tip: Call 311 to report missing traffic safety signs.

  • Visit your local Search and Rescue Association and learn how your Crew can get involved.
  • Learn how to be safe in cougar country.

Day 4: Camps and Outings Safety

Tips to share:
 
  • Track your route on a GPS.
  • If possible, pack a satellite phone for remote excursions.
  • Share an itinerary of your trip with friends and family who aren’t coming along.

Scouters’ tip: When winter camping, watch exposed skin for signs of frostbite. Have buddies check each other.

Day 5: Bullying and Verbal Abuse

Tips to share:
 
  • Be sensitive to the values and beliefs of others.
  • Don’t laugh at an inappropriate joke just to fit in. Let others know when a joke is unacceptable
  • Be sure that themes for events are inclusive.

Scouters’ tip: Include Section members when addressing instances of bullying. Having a couple of senior Section members talk to a bully can be more effective in resolving a problem in the long run.

  • Try some conflict resolution games; there are heaps online, and more than a few should be right for your Crew. You can also research communication and team-building games to help foster a healthy dynamic in your Crew.

Day 6: Internet and Mobile Phone Safety

Tips to share:
 
  • Always delete your browser history after online banking or shopping.
  • Have a password on your mobile phone.
  • Set reasonable limits for the amount of time you spend online. Internet addiction is a widely-recognized disorder with serious ramifications.

Resources and Program Ideas:

  • Do you sometimes text and drive? It only takes a second for this to happen.

Day 7: Halloween Safety

Tips to share:
 
  • Avoid sharing Halloween treats that have nuts.
  • Make transportation plans with a group if you’re attending a Halloween party. Have a designated driver.
  • Avoid driving in residential areas as much as possible.

Scouters’ tip: Keep pets indoors so that they don’t bother trick-or-treaters (and vice-versa).
