The 30th Annual Scout Baden-Powell Banquet took place at the Snelgrove Community Centre, Wednesday, Feb. 23.
Scout/Guide week is celebrated annually across Canada as a remembrance of heritage in honour of Baden-Powell and his wife, Olave, the first World Chief Guide.
The 8th Brampton Scout Group, one of the largest group in the city has 92 members including Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers and Peel Medical Venturers, said Frank Egan, group commissioner, 8th Brampton Scout Group.
“Both Scouts Canada and Girl Guides enjoy celebratory events in the spirit of camaraderie and friendship between the two movements,” explained Egan. “Scouts Canada is the country’s leading youth organization. For so many Canadians, defining moments in their lives started with Scouts. Former Scouts are everywhere you turn: professionals, actors, writers, teachers and adventurers...”
The Brampton event kicked-off with the singing of the Canadian National Anthem by Jessica Pierre. The participants enjoyed a Swiss Chalet dinner afterwards.
The evening was an opportunity to showcase the achievements of the youth and volunteers and included

The Prestigious Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme was developed to encourage all youth ages 14 to 25 to be active, to participate in new activities and pursue their current interests in four different areas.
Scouts Canada founder Baden-Powell, was a lieutenant-general in the British Army. Besides being a soldier, he was a writer.  In 1899, during the Second Boer War in South Africa, Baden-Powell successfully defended the town in the Siege of Mafeking. Several of his military books, written for military reconnaissance and scout training in his African years, were also read by boys. Based on those earlier books, he wrote Scouting for Boys, published in 1908 for youth readership. During writing, he tested his ideas through a camping trip on Brownsea Island with the local Boys’ Brigade and sons of his friends that began on Aug. 1, 1907, which is now seen as the beginning of Scouting.
